These days we all live and work in a multi-device, multi-platform world, and so when building Office for Macone of our key objectives was to make it as easy as possible to transition from using Office for Windows to using Office for Mac and back again. So when it came to working with external data, we applied that same logic: how can we make the experience great and working cross platform easier than ever?

We examined how we could improve external data for Excel for Mac and made the following changes:. This means several great things for anyone who works with external data:. In addition, all of the ways in which you interact with external data are now consistent between the platforms. Looking for that Refresh button? One of the biggest improvements to working with external data connections in Excel for Windows in recent releases has been the Connection Manager.

It provides a central place to see all of the data connections in a workbook, see where they are used, and modify, remove or refresh each one individually.

With Excel for Mac, you now have that same Connection Manager you are familiar with from Windows.

All of your connections are displayed, and you can click any of them to see where they are used in your workbook and to perform any action. The Connection Properties dialog has been streamlined as well to match Excel for Windows, so that you now only see the properties that apply to your particular data connection.

All of your connection properties are in one place and just like Excel for Windows. On the left is a listing of the databases and tables in your database that you can explore.

At the top right is a color-coded SQL editor, and at the bottom right are the results of any query you run. Once it does, click Return Data to drop your data right back into your worksheet. Working with a third-party data provider works the exact same way.

The integration is still in its early stages, but it was released on a public preview through the Office Insider program for Mac. The most important part about Power Query, besides its user interface, is the actual engine that runs all of the transformations.

Guess what! That engine is now able to run inside of Mac. The current integration is very limited on what you can do, but so much of the ground work is already in place. What exactly can we do right now with this integration? We can do 2 things:. The only supported connectors right now are for local files:. The current integration basically limits you to consumption only. You can get queries from other folks who create them in Windows Excel and you can refresh them inside of MacOS.

My first intention was to figure out what M functions are already available inside of this integration. You can see the full list of available functions on Power Query in Excel for Mac from here. Most of the functions are already in there.

I then did a simple test refreshing a query that connected to a file on a local file inside my windows PC and it gave me an error, so I went into the connections window, change the file path to my local MacOS path and it worked.

That was pretty straightforward, but what about the performance? The engine is already there. We need too perform an engine test.

I created a query from that code and saved the file in my SharePoint so I could easily access the file from both my Mac mini and my Windows PC. I do have an acceptable hardware in my own opinion. My Windows Desktop PC.

My Mac Mini v What if I run this same test on the same hardware? I was advised to use Boot Camp to install Windows 10 and partition my hard drive so I could test the same query under the same hardware. I installed Windows 10 through Boot Camp, installed Office and then ran the query inside of my Windows inside my Mac mini and the average of that test was 17 seconds.

The fastest time was around seconds:. This is still a big difference! Power Query in Excel for Mac is still at least 3x faster than on Windows. To select the web page containing the data you want to import into Excel, you can:.
